Part III: My Journey to Modesty - “Why I only wear dresses and skirts as a Christian woman”

If you haven’t yet read Parts I and II of the “My Journey to Modesty” series, please read those before continuing on to the rest of the journey in Part III. I began to feel conviction of The Holy Spirit about my wardrobe some months after I began wearing a Christian head covering. I never dressed provocatively according to worldly standards as in my clothing never showed my body parts, cleavage nor was it tight by any means. However, I did wear leggings quite often or skirts that would unintentionally show my womanly curves.

What I mean by “unintentionally” is that by nature, women’s clothing is made to fit “exact.” By exact, the clothing is going to show the curves and outline of the female body through her wardrobe pieces, particularly if she is wearing jeans or pants. It is uncommon to see a woman wearing oversized clothing as often as you do men because that is not the general nature of female clothing in today’s society. The clothing I wore fit exactly to the female body which I later understood and realized was displeasing to The Lord.

What is it about worldly female attire that is displeasing to The Lord? It is important to Abba that His daughters carry themselves with biblical femininity. In biblical femininity there is a softness and gentleness pleasing unto The Lord. This is reflected in our personhood and how we represent Christ here on the earth. Biblical femininity includes modesty which is the covering up of what would be perceived as enticing to the natural eye or “visually appealing” which could include skin, hair, clothing, jewelry, body scent and the like. Modesty covers up what would naturally draw attention to oneself. It is keeping that which is given by Yahweh in “secret” so as not to be advertised for all to see or experience.

I am reminded of the wayward woman spoken of in the book of Proverbs where it states how she was loud and hanging out in the streets which is very unbecoming of a woman especially during biblical times. She can also be attributed to the immoral woman and her seductive agenda. The way one dresses is an indication of the heart. Sadly, many women in the world wear tight and revealing clothing for the attention of men or approval from others. Unbeknownst to them, these men are only lusting after the outward appearance and how it can satisfy their personal and fleshly desires. Some women do understand but for many, they don’t understand until it is too late.

But what about those who say that women only wore head coverings and long dresses plus skirts during biblical days and it does not apply to modern times because it is Old Testament? I beg to differ. God is raising up a group of his daughters whom He has revealed what is pleasing to Him in His word that is not just applicable to ancient times. Yes, He is the Ancient of Days but He is still the same yesterday, today and forevermore meaning God HAS NOT and WILL NOT change!

Are you trying to say that a holy and righteously moral God must be accepting of modern fashion in today’s world because “it’s trendy?” When has Jehovah ever been in the business of doing things according to society’s standards? Did He not say in His word that we are to be “set apart” for His use? Please tell me that you are not trying to modernize a holy God and acclimate Him to this world in the 21st century with current trends, technology, fashion, gadgets…Do you see how silly and foolish that sounds? As if we could manipulate an omniscient, omnipotent and glorious God…ha!

Stay tuned for Part IV of the series, “My Journey to Modesty: Why have Christians been called to be set apart?”

May the grace and peace of our beautiful Lord and Savior Yeshua be with you!
